Fr Anthony Le Duc SVD collar 2021 150A Divine Word Missionary priest who is based in Bangkok, has been appointed to a new role at an organisation which explores the intersection of religion and communication.

Fr Anthony Le Duc SVD, a member of the AUS Province, has been appointed as Executive Director of the Asian Research Centre for Religion and Social Communication (ARC).

Priest gives communion during COVID Shutterstock 150Despite the ever-increasing degree of globalisation taking place in the world characterised by intertwining economic systems buttressed by internet technology, it is rare to have a happening to which every section of humanity on all continents of the earth can directly relate, writes Fr Anthony Le Duc SVD.

The coronavirus pandemic that made its appearance in late 2019 and has continued to ravage the world in 2021 is an exception to the usual state of affairs because it has managed to turn the entire world upside down with all the disruptions brought upon the global political, social, economic and religious structures.

Today’s gospel summarises the early activity of Jesus in Galilee. He went about the villages preaching the Kingdom of God and healing people – a sign that the Kingdom of God was already present among the people.

Fr Joseph Reddy farewell MFields 150Fr Joseph Reddy SVD has bid a fond farewell to parishioners at Mary, Mother of the Church parish in Macquarie Fields as he prepares to take up a new assignment in the Townsville Diocese.

Fr Joseph has been Assistant Priest at Macquarie Fields since April 2017 and says his time there taught him a lot.

Lay Partners international zoom meeting Dec 2020 150The SVD Lay Partners group at Marsfield recently took part in an international meeting of Lay Partners via Zoom, where they continued to deepen their formation and grow in understanding of their mission in the Arnoldus Family.

AUS Province Mission Secretary, Fr Viet Nguyen SVD says the meeting, hosted by the SVD Generalate in Rome included Lay Partners from SVD provinces in Asia and the Pacific.

Fr Thien Nguyen PhD 150A doctoral thesis by Fr Thien Nguyen SVD, which researched conversion from Christianity to Buddhism in Australia, found that such conversion was a complex and long process based more on dissatisfaction with the person’s Christian tradition rather than proselytisation.

Fr Thien, who graduated from Monash University with his PhD this month, says he hopes his research will help Church leaders to change their pastoral approach in caring for the faithful and encourage all believers to engage in dialogue across faiths.

Bangkok communications roundtable 150As faith communities raced to adopt technology more than ever to provide pastoral outreach during the coronavirus pandemic, Fr Anthony Le Duc SVD was exploring the underpinnings of such activity in an international roundtable on religion and social communication in Thailand.

The 11th International Roundtable of the Asian Research Centre for Religion and Social Communication (ARC) was held last month at St Louis College in Bangkok.

Rosary beads 150Once in a while I run across a social media post or a graphic that says “Proud to be Catholic”, writes Fr Anthony Le Duc SVD. When reflecting on the phrase, I think I understand what the poster is trying to communicate through these words. Perhaps it’s the feeling of joy to feel that one was created by a loving and gracious God who not only grants life to us but continually invites us to enter into a deeper relationship with God.

Perhaps it’s also the feeling of having a mission and purpose because all Catholics are called by God to collaborate in the redemptive work that God is carrying out for the sake of all humanity. It’s also perhaps the feeling of jubilance knowing that we have been saved through the actions of Jesus Christ, who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. God has given us Jesus Christ as our Savior and Teacher who guides and calls us into a new life of selfless love and service.

Fr Henry Adler SVD close hs 150The first results from the latest Census have been released this week and they confirm that here in Australia, we are living in an increasingly diverse religious and cultural society.

The Census showed two key things that were already somewhat obvious to anybody who’s been paying attention to such things – the number of people identifying as being of ‘no religion’ has risen and the nation is becoming increasingly multicultural. What meaning can we take from this?
