On Monday, I had the opportunity to visit Palm Island, an Aboriginal community in Queensland. I was grateful to spend time with Fr Mahn Le SVD and learn about his missionary life and ministry.

Today the Church celebrates the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, one of the most basic tenets of our Christian belief and underlying principle of our faith.

Fr Boni Buahendri SVD Profile Pic 2026 250As you receive this edition of In the Word, we have recently celebrated Pentecost and are about to celebrate Trinity Sunday.

These are two feasts in the liturgical year that were very close to the heart of the SVD founder, St Arnold Janssen, and are an integral part of the spirituality of the Divine Word Missionaries.

Among the different doctrines of our faith, nothing is more mysterious than the dogma of the Trinity. Simply put, we have one God but in three distinct persons. It doesn’t mean that we have three gods but it also doesn’t mean that we have a God who is alone.

‘The Lord is one, and love the Lord your God with all strength, mind, heart, and then love neighbours as oneself’’. Is God that narcissistic and jealous that He prioritises himself before other gods, and people?

In the gospel readings of this Sunday and last, Jesus keeps repeating as if begging us to remain in him as he remains in his Father.

Today’s Gospel passage is a part of the dialogue of Jesus with Nicodemus, a Jewish Pharisee and religious leader, who had come to Jesus expressing a sincere belief from his very heart.

During my first year in the seminary, in my Religious Education class, our teacher challenged the class and asked if there was anybody who would be able to recite aloud all the Ten Commandments as written in the book of Exodus.

My dear brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. In today's Gospel Jesus gives us a clear view of how to be a good disciple of Jesus.

Happy New Year! And, with the New Year we are blessed with three occasions for this day. First, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary as Mother of God. Second, we also celebrate the Octave of Christmas and lastly, we celebrate the beginning of the New Year.
