18th Sunday in Ordinary Time - 2020

Fr Frank Gerry SVD 150Dear Reader,

God’s word to us in this Sunday's liturgy are words we really need to hear and to welcome warmly.

They speak to our hearts. They give a sense the Lord understand clearly our real needs.

Let me simply repeat some of them to you:

“Come, all you who are thirsty.

Give ear and come to me;

listen, that you may live.

 With you I will make an everlasting covenant.” (Is.  55:1-3).

Do I know my thirst, my need?

Can I allow the gentle invitation and the promise ‘that you may live’ to touch me?

It’s okay to admit I’m needy and vulnerable, for then I can be awakened to a promise of life and a relationship that is everlasting and lifegiving.

Sense the gentle invitation in the words that can open us up to our real needs and how to meet them.

Then St. Paul in his letter affirms what I have just mentioned.

“I am convinced that nether death nor life, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord’  (Rm. 8:37-39).

There is a growing realisation and a deepening understanding of the treasure we possess in our relationship with the Loving Christ.

How gifted we are!

It is important though to give ourselves time to develop to this awareness and sureness. It doesn’t happen overnight.

The Gospel story of Jesus feeding the thousands who have forgotten to worry about where their next meal was coming from in their enthusiasm to hear him speak words that touch them profoundly and reveal to them how truly blessed and loved they are.

The three readings this morning encourage us to live within this blessed awareness day in and day out.
