Br Ruel Bancoro SVD in Africa sewing 150After years serving the sick and the poor through his vocation as a nurse, a doctor and an SVD brother, Br Ruel Bancoro SVD is about to begin a new chapter as he takes up Theology studies for the priesthood.

Br Ruel will undertake his studies through the University of Divinity in Melbourne – although due to COVID border closures, he will begin the first semester online from the Philippines.

Henry Headshot 2019 150 Light backgroundThe growth of the SVD lay partners groups around the world continues to bring fresh energy to the Society of the Divine Word, and one initiative they have undertaken is to promote an international ‘Prayer Bridge’ to mark the World Day of the Poor.

The worldwide prayer initiative was an idea conceived by the lay partners of the SVD in Germany and embraced by lay partners and SVD members in a range of countries and this year it will take place on Sunday, November 17.

Clement Baffoe SVD 150As I walked with my confreres from the parish to our community after Mass, it struck me that we were like the two disciples on their way to Emmaus. Like the two disciples, my confreres and I have had the same experience but whilst their experience was the death of Jesus, ours was growing up in a continent that has been stricken by poverty.

We thank God that we have taken the vow of evangelical poverty. However, we did sincerely ask ourselves: “How poor are our Religious in Africa compared with the local people?”

Fr-Christian-Tauchner-SVD---150Ecological concerns are no stranger to Mission work, but too many people, including missionaries, are yet to be convinced of the central importance of ecology in the Mission of God, says visiting Austrian missionary, Fr Christian Tauchner SVD.

Fr Christian, who works in publications at St Augustine’s Mission Institute in Germany, and has previously been a missionary in Latin America, spoke on the topic of Ecology and Mission at the recent International Mission Symposium in Melbourne.
